Induction motors are used extensively in Process Control Industry as compared to DC Motors because induction motors are rather rugged and are of low cost. However speed control of induction motor is not as simple as speed control of DC motors. In induction motors, speed is determined by the applied frequency and torque is controlled by the applied voltage. It is also required to avoid saturation of the magnetic core in the motor to keep the V/F ratio constant. Therefore it is possible to vary the speed and torque by varying the frequency and voltage. The micro controller based VFD is highly suitable for precision position control, as it enables  the motor to vary the speed in accordance with the pre-set position by means of sensing the command and feedback signals. As  the feedback reaches very close to the command signal, the speed is reduced and positioning takes place without over-shoot or under-shoot, overcoming the inherent inertia. Position accuracy to the tune of 0.1% is achievable. There is no need to use Phase Sequencer and Single Phasing preventive circuits in a VFD Controller as these have no impact on the control logics. One of the very important plus points is that the VFD totally eliminates the need for Limit and Torque sensors.
